Andy Klein, a regular critic for NPR affiliate KPCC’s Film Week, started out as film editor/critic in the mid-1980s for the Los Angeles Reader, where he worked until 1996. He has long been a presence in the world of L.A.’s free weekly newspapers, working at New Times, CityBeat, and Brand X. His reviews, commentaries, interviews, and criticism have appeared in Movieline, Los Angeles Magazine, American Film, Animation World, the Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Salon, Film Comment, the Los Angeles Times, the L.A. Weekly, Empire, and the Christian Science Monitor, among many other national and international publications. He contributed to The X List: The National Society of Film Critics’ Guide to the Movies That Turn Us On, ed. Jami Bernard (2005), The A List: The National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films, ed. Jay Carr (2002), Sex and Zen & A Bullet in the Head: The Essential Guide to Hong Kong’s Mind-bending Films, ed. Stefan Hammond and Mike Wilkins (1996), and They Went Thataway: Redefining Film Genres, ed. Richard T. Jameson (1994). Among his numerous DVD commentaries, his appearance with The RZA for The 36th Chamber of Shaolin is a stand-out. He holds an English degree from Harvard University, and he attended UCLA’s master’s program in Motion Picture/Television History and Criticism.
